Information
The County Clerk is also the ex-officio Recorder of Deeds for Edgar County. In an average year, we record nearly 5,000 Deeds, Mortgages and other valuable records.
Edgar County records begin in 1827; and, except for Military Records, are open to the public. Indexes up through 1993 are handwritten. Beginning in 1994 through the present, indexes may be searched and viewed from the public search computer. Documents may be printed for a nominal fee. There is a per page charge for copies of recorded documents.
Other recorded documents include Surveys, Plats of Subdivisions, Monument Records, Release of Mortgages, Assignments, Ordinances, State and Federal Liens, Judgments, and many miscellaneous documents.
Recorded Military records are not subject to public inspection. These documents shall be accessible only to the person named in the document, the named person’s dependents, the county veterans’ service officer, representatives of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, or any person with written authorization from the named person or the named person’s dependents. A special application form is required to be properly executed prior to issuance of any military record.
All instruments presented for recording must meet the requirements set forth in Illinois Statutes and County Resolutions/Ordinances. Certain Deeds must be accompanied by the Illinois Transfer Declaration Form, which may be filled out online in a guided and interactive fashion on the web site of the Illinois Department of Revenue. Recording fees and other requirements may be obtained by calling the office at (217) 466-7433.
Special Considerations
- Any properly executed instruments presented for recordation after 3:00 p.m. will be recorded the next business day.
- The Recorder’s Office provides NO LEGAL ADVICE or assistance in filling out forms pertaining to the legal ownership or conveyance of real estate. Please consult a licensed attorney.
- The Recorder’s Office provides NO ABSTRACTING SERVICES. Please contact a title search company.
- Beginning in 1994 through the present, indexes may be searched and viewed from the public search computer. Documents may be printed for a nominal fee.
Foreclosures
NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE copies required to be provided to the County of Edgar under Public Act 96-856, pursuant to 735 ILCS 5/15-1503(b), may be sent to the address above.

All instruments presented for recording must meet the requirements set forth in Illinois statutes. Standard documents must be on 8 ½” x 11”. Print must be legible. First page must have 3” x 5” blank space in upper right corner with ½” clean margins on sides and bottom of all pages.
